My passion for sewing started when I was a little girl growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My mother sewed all the time and could make just about anything. It was fascinating to see my mom sew. I used to sit down next to her and just watch. I wanted to learn to sew like her, but she didn’t let me near her old, black Singer sewing machine!
When I was seven years old, I was so desperate to sew that I ripped my doll’s dress into pieces and then hand-sewed it back together. I was so proud of myself. When I showed my mother, she realized it was time to teach me how to sew.
I have so many good memories of my mom and I sewing together. And do you remember that old black Singer? Yes, when I was good enough with hand sewing, my mom let me use it!
I have always heard that history repeats itself and my 11-year-old daughter, has proven it to me. For years, she watched me sew, just like I watched my own mother. A few years ago, she asked me to teach her. She invited a small group of friends to sew with us and we had a wonderful time. The girls started spreading the word that I was teaching sewing classes, and that’s how Sew Simple LLC was born: by passing on sewing skills from mother to daughter.
